Thanks to all the empty cardboard boxes laying around from Christmas, it was super easy to make these burning buildings for my son’s fire truck themed birthday party! This DIY project quickly comes together using just a few materials, and is budget friendly (as in less than $10!).

These would also be perfect DIY decor for other party themes such as,

  • Spider Man
  • Super Heros
  • Paw Patrol
  • Emergency Vehicles

here’s how I made these burning buildings for less than $10

these burning buildings come together in about 20 minutes using only a few materials you likely have most of laying around at home!

assembling the “burning building” party decorations

step-by-step

  • remove any shipping tape or stickers on the front of your boxes (if they’d be difficult to cover with the white paper “windows”)
  • re-tape the boxes with shipping tape from the inside (if necessary)
  • cut rectangles out of white paper (I used cardstock)
  • attach your white paper “windows” to the box using glue or tape (I used a hot glue gun)
  • using a knife or scissors, cut a straight line across the top of the box, leaving a couple inches on each side so you’re not cutting all the way across. you are just creating a slit to stuff the tissue paper through.
  • place one piece of yellow tissue on top of one piece of orange tissue paper, pinch the paper in the center and shove this part into the slit you cut in the cardboard.
  • give the tissue a little “fluff”, and now you have flames! repeat this as much as you need to fill the slits across the tops of the boxes. I also glued some tissue paper flames in between two of the boxes with my hot glue gun, but you can do whatever you think looks best with the boxes you have.
these were perfect for transforming our living room into a little firefighter’s dream party!
