5 birthday experience ideas for kids

Want to do something special to celebrate, that doesn’t need to include a large party with lots of presents and elaborate decor? (of course it still can if you want!) Here are a few ways to make your little one’s birthday special without over extending on decorations & material gifts.

1. backyard camping

pitch a tent & have an outdoor sleepover! to make it festive, hang some bistro lights or garlands in the trees. light a bonfire & make some s’mores. take turns telling stories & wishes for the next year. maybe even set up an outdoor movie theater!

2. scavenger hunt

take it to a nearby park, or explore in your own backyard. collect items found in nature to make a craft together, or choose a theme based on their favorite book or movie. for some ideas for planning a scavenger hunt, check out these ideas from Schooza – or this treasure hunt planning guide from Play Dates to Parties.

3. playground picnic

keep it simple and head to their most loved playground! pack a picnic basket with their favorite goodies to share with friends. maybe throw in some bubbles, or a game or two.

4. movie night

nothing cozier than a movie night with your favorite people! add themed pajamas, or dress up as your favorite movie character. movie snacks galore for the menu! if you’re feeling crafty, turn large cardboard boxes into theater seats decorated to match the theme – or turn them into cars for a DIY drive in movie.

5. time with close friends

have them choose a couple close friends to take somewhere special – a local theme park, arcade, indoor rock climbing, or a nearby lake. maybe you feel like keeping the fun at home & invite them over to bake some cupcakes or decorate a birthday cake together!
